Every season has its charm
Seasonal highlights
Spring01
Spring blossoms & the cattle drive to the mountain pastures
In the spring, Vinschgau/Val Venosta comes alive. The apple blossom transforms the valley into a sea of white and the grazing season begins on the Alpine pastures. The ‘Waalweg’ trails are accessible again from May, and the cycling routes and bike trails are ready and waiting.
Summer02
High-altitude Alpine tours & cool refreshment
Some visitors enjoy themselves in the valley, others are drawn to the high-altitude Alpine pastures. Up here it is pleasantly cool, the Alpine meadows glow in lush green, and the mountain streams babble in a refreshingly cool and invigorating way. Countless peaks, ranging from easy to very challenging, are waiting to be conquered. Many mountain huts are open and serve homemade delicacies.
Autumn03
Golden larches & harvest festival
The autumn is the most beautiful hiking season in Vinschgau/Val Venosta. The larches turn golden yellow, the air is clear and the wide-ranging views stretch as far as the glaciers. It’s also harvest time, so you can buy fresh apples and chestnuts from the farms. And culturally, autumn has many vibrant traditions to offer.
Winter04
Snowshoeing & skiing
Besides skiing, tobogganing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice skating, many ‘Waalweg’ trails in Vinschgau/Val Venosta are also accessible in winter as winter hiking trails. Those who prefer something more active can head to the slopes or strap on some snowshoes and trek through the powder snow to secluded Alpine pastures.

On historic paths through nature
Hiking & irrigation channel paths
The ‘Waalweg’ irrigation channel paths are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of the Vinschgau/Val Venosta hiking network. They owe their name to the ‘Waale’ – man-made irrigation channels from the Middle Ages, which brought water from the mountain streams to the dry fields.
Today, they have become some of the most popular hiking trails in South Tyrol. From Mals/Malles you can easily reach several ‘Waalweg’ trails on foot or by bus. The wonderful thing is that you don’t have to be a mountaineer to experience unforgettable moments here. The ‘Waalweg’ trails wind gently through orchards, larch forests and sunny slopes – always offering views of the surrounding mountains.
Via Claudia Augusta & more
Biking & cycling
Vinschgau/Val Venosta is one of the best biking regions in the Alps. Why?
