From 1959 to today

Our history

Over 65 years of family history are embedded in the walls of Bio Hotel Panorama. What started out as a small family business in 1959 has been Italy’s first certified organic hotel since 2002 – a place where tradition meets pioneering spirit.

The story of the Steiner family is a one of conviction: that true enjoyment can only arise from respect for nature. Let us take you on a journey through more than six decades, during which a vision became reality.

1959
The beginnings
of a family business
It all began with a family who firmly believe in this place. In 1959, Thea’s parents Karl and Anna Franziska Schenk founded their business in Mals/Malles – at that time without realising that the business would one day become the pioneer for an entire movement. What mattered was hospitality, hard work and the connection to Vinschgau/Val Venosta. The foundations were laid for what would later become Bio Hotel Panorama.
1985
The road to
organic certification
In the 1980s, a realisation began to take hold: good tourism and good food can only come from an unspoilt natural environment. The Steiner family started to pay more attention to the outstanding quality of the ingredients they used and integrated many home-made products into their culinary offerings. The company was awarded the environmental seal for waste separation, which was not yet standard practice at the time.
1993
The garden
takes shape
A milestone: At 1,050 metres above sea level, the garden gave way to a vast field. Herbs, tomatoes and salad leaves grow here – watered with collected rainwater, tended with passion. The garden became a symbol of what Bio Hotel Panorama embodies: from the garden straight to the plate.
1998
From an inn
to the hotel
The hotel business was established. What started out as a restaurant and inn for travellers passing through now opened its doors to guests from all over the world. The vision was clear: a place where holidaymakers don’t just stay overnight, but become part of a philosophy.
1999
Extension
using timber construction
The hotel grows – naturally using timber construction. Stone pine, natural materials, sustainable construction methods: even when it comes to construction, it’s clear that sustainability isn’t just a marketing term for the Steiners, but a way of life.
2002
Italy’s first
organic hotel!
Mission accomplished: in 2002, Bio Hotel Panorama became the first hotel in Italy to receive organic certification in accordance with the EU organic standard, and the field was also awarded the Bioland certificate. A historic moment – not just for the Steiner family, but for sustainable tourism throughout Italy. Years of work, conviction and courage paid off. Ever since then, we have been a member of the Association of Organic Hotels and proud pioneers for a movement that is more relevant today than ever.
2023
Awarded
4-star status
A further step in Bio Hotel Panorama’s development: in 2023, the hotel was officially awarded 4 stars. A confirmation of our approach, which combines sustainable values with a high level of comfort and genuine hospitality
today
Current developments
Bio Hotel Panorama is constantly evolving – with new ideas, fresh inspiration and the same conviction that has guided us from the very beginning. As a member of Bio Fair South Tyrol, we are strengthening our commitment to honest, regional and sustainable agriculture.

And the future is also assured: Georg will take over management of the hotel in 2026 and lead Bio Hotel Panorama into the next generation – with respect for what has been built and with new visions for the future.

Today Georg Steiner runs Bio Hotel Panorama together with his mother Thea, supported by Julia and Friedrich. Two generations work hand in hand, united by the conviction that the organic approach should know no compromise. What started out in 1959 as a family business is today living proof that tradition and innovation are not mutually exclusive, but complementary.
